A Slippery Slope?

Just the other day, I asked the question “Have Republicans gone crazy”, giving several examples of their over-the-top rhetoric. That was only a smattering, because there are plenty more out there and some of them deserve a full entry of their own and that’s the case today. As I was going through my morning routine recently, I found this on Huffington Post: Ohio Man Demands State Revoke ‘Bisexual’ Buckeye’s Status As State Tree. I do believe this pushes Ohio into the lead of the Crazystakes National Championship. In fact, it leaves the previous front-runner, Louisiana and their Loch Ness monster text books in the dust. Tennessee and Arizona aren’t even in the running anymore, what with their weak as dishwater discrimination of immigrants and “Don’t say gay” bill. One begins to wonder where all this will end.

I understand that some of our Christian brothers and sisters believe that homosexuality is prohibited in the Bible. I disagree and believe those folks are misguided and are, at best, taking scripture out of context. At worst, I suspect there are some who proof-texting to bolster their bigotry against LGBT people. But, I’m pretty sure even the most hard-core cherry picker wouldn’t say:

“The buckeye is our state tree and most of us gladly wear the nickname, “buckeyes.” But it is shameful and unacceptable that a bisexual tree should represent us! We are flaunting the Holy Bible! I urge everyone to contact their state representative and demand legislation removing the buckeye as our state tree and condemning the use of the term “buckeye” as a nickname for residents of Ohio”

I’m hoping this is satire and not serious. But, what if he is serious? This kind of thing could lead to a slippery slope of craziness, hatred and bigotry, right? Oh, wait, we’ve already hit bottom on that slope with over 30 states banning same-sex marriage in their constitutions, the bullying of young people, sometimes leading to suicide and those sickening “Pray the gay away” programs. Dang.

Mr. Fletchner (author of the letter in question) and anyone who would agree with him, might be surprised at couple of things. First, the  Bible never says a word about bisexual plants or animals. Now, that could be chalked up to a number of things, but mostly I think it’s such a stupid idea that even those anal-retentive scribes and Pharisees didn’t consider it worthy of attention. Second, our conservative brothers and sisters demand over and over that homosexuality is a choice and God would never create anything like that. Guess what gang? There are examples throughout nature of plants and animals that are bisexual. And, not one of them made a sentient choice to be that way. I’m pretty sure the buckeye is part of God’s creation, along with the other things on the earth. So, if God created a bisexual buckeye tree, your argument has a large hole in it. A couple, actually. First, God created something that isn’t strictly heterosexual and, second, these unisexual things that he created didn’t wake up one morning and decide “I think I’ll be gay today”. They were made that way. Just like I was made straight and gay people were made gay. So, let’s just drop all this idiocy and start living together the way God intended: in one big, loving community.
