Are You a Terrible Parent?

I’d say the odds are against it, even though we know they exist. And, yes the “terrible parent” bit is over the top, but the contrast between the two panels in the picture is striking in its hypocrisy. The fact is, this isn’t new territory; people have espoused these kinds of views as long as I can remember. It’s getting worse, too. Everyday, I see graphics talking about God, guns and guts or how something is protected by God and a gun (“mess around and you might meet both”). To me, none of this is compatible with the words of Jesus, who taught us to love our enemies and turn the other cheek. Besides, if you’re trusting in God, why do you need a gun?

I do not understand how someone can hold enough hate in their  heart to condone violence toward their brothers and sisters, while professing to love and follow Jesus, the quintessential pacifist. I especially don’t understand how people can hate someone enough to allow them to be beaten, abused, murdered and discriminated against, all based on a few bible passages. I’m not just talking to the whack job pastors who call for everything from concentration camps to state sponsored execution, I’m speaking to all those in that “silent majority”, who say their in favor in same-sex marriage and LGBT rights; yet in the privacy of the voting booth, they make their mark for discrimination. I’m speaking to all those people who claim to “hate the sin and love the sinner”, yet somehow don’t understand that you can’t hate something that’s such an integral part of an person without spreading some hate on that person, too. I’m speaking to those who want to “save” the institution of marriage by banning same-sex marriage, yet ignore divorce, infidelity and spousal abuse that is rampant in heterosexual marriage today. And, I’m speaking to parents who get up in arms over the “gay agenda” and have a cow over a comic book wedding and think nothing of allowing their kids to play ultra-violent video games and read graphic novels filled with blood and guts. This bald-faced hypocrisy at it’s worst.

Now, I don’t want anyone to think I’m saying they can’t do any of these things; it is most certainly your right to believe whatever you choose. I’m not even saying you’re a terrible parent; I know a lot of people who are against same-sex marriage that are excellent parents. What I am saying is that if you believe same-sex marriage is an abomination and condone violence in any way, shape or form, you might need to reconsider a few things.
